Horace Barnes and his wife Phoebe (nee Higgins) were among the earliest people who came to the LeRoy area settling on a 60-acre homestead in the late 1840s in section 14 of the township, approximately one-mile northeast of the Village of LeRoy on Dairy Road. The couple came from Onondaga County, New York.
