Joan Mielke Joan Mielke

Joan Mielke, 88 years of age, joyfully went home to her loving savior Jesus on the beautiful, sunny morning of May 22. Joan was born on January 10, 1934, in Fond du Lac, to the late Robert and Mildred (Kubley) Funk. She was the oldest of two children, and she was educated in the Fond du Lac School District. Joan married Robert Mielke on October 7, 1954, in Milwaukee. They were devoted members at Trinity Lutheran Church in Dundee. Together they had three children. Their oldest, a son, tragically died at birth, but Joan waited patiently to hold him until now. They also had two daughters – Joanne (Harold) Theisen and Beatrice Mielke. Joan had three grandchildren – Andy Theisen, Sarah (David) Mowry, and Jon Theisen. She also had four great-grandchildren Jack Mowry, Thomas Mowry, Eli Mowry, and Samuel Mowry.

Joan was a devoted wife and mother and was married for 25 years to Robert when he passed away unexpectedly. She then began working at St. Joseph’s Convent in Campbellsport in the housekeeping department. She meticulously kept the Sister’s rooms clean with loving care for 17 years. After retirement, Joan enjoyed crocheting, puzzles, and beautiful coloring projects. Her favorite “hobby” was spoiling her squirrels, birds, and her cat, Buddy. She so enjoyed watching them enjoy their treats. Joan loved all God’s creatures and had a knack for attracting them and fattening them up too! She leaves behind many local chubby critters and birds who are also mourning her passing.

But Joan’s greatest passion was her family. She was the first to call on birthdays, and she had her rooms wallpapered in photos, newspaper clippings, and artwork from everyone. She just doted on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She never had much, but if you were lucky enough to be her grandchild, you always felt rich in love. She spoiled her grandchildren with heaping piles of her delicious, mashed potatoes and poppyseed tortes. Then, when she was no longer able to make those, she spoiled her great-grandkids with the biggest chocolate bunny, and her “grand-dog” with the biggest dog bone, that could be found.

Joan was humble and selfless, a fighter, and ever so faithful. She courageously overcame many hardships in her life, clinging to the Lord. Each difficulty she faced only strengthened her faith in God. Her prayers and constant support will be dearly missed here, but we can only imagine how much more her love will do from heaven.

Joan is survived by her two daughters, three grand – children, son-in-law, four great-grandsons, and a brother, Robert Funk. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, on January 18, 1980; her son, Robert, on October 25, 1956; by her parents, Robert and Mildred Funk; and in-laws, Louis and Lena (Schultz) Mielke.

Visitation will be Tuesday, May 31, from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Dundee (W494 Elm St. Campbellsport).
